cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Paris will dedicate a square to Christo and Jeanne-Claude on October 3, 2025, marking the 40th anniversary of their iconic work, The Pont Neuf Wrapped. The square, surrounding the statue of Henry IV on Pont Neuf, will be renamed Place du Pont Neuf – Christo et Jeanne-Claude. The ceremony will feature Vladimir Yavachev, the artists' nephew and director of their foundation. A free exhibition, Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Paris Projects, runs under Pont Neuf until October 30, showcasing photographs, drawings, collages, scale models, and digital content. In 2026, artist JR will create a reinterpretation of Pont Neuf. The original wrapping in 1985 used 41,800 square meters of fabric, 13 kilometers of rope, and 12 tons of steel cables, involving 12 engineers and 300 specialized workers. Three million visitors saw the wrapped bridge over two weeks. Christo and Jeanne-Claude met in Paris in 1958 and created three monumental works in the city: Wall of Oil Barrels – The Iron Curtain (1961), The Pont Neuf Wrapped (1975–85), and L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped (1961–2021), which attracted 6 million visitors in person and 685 million via media. A commemorative plaque will be placed on the building on Île Saint-Louis where the couple lived.
