Paris to Fill New Metro Stations with Art by 2030
By 2030, the Grand Paris Express expansion will transform four new metro stations into contemporary art spaces with over 70 permanent installations. The cultural program, Art du Grand Paris, involves artists including Sophie Calle, JR, Anselm Kiefer, Eva Jospin, Daniel Buren, Otobong Nkanga, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mona Hatoum, and Joana Vasconcelos. Italian artist Loris Cecchini is also participating. The works range from mosaics and monumental reliefs to light and sculptural installations. José-Manuel Gonçalvès, former director of Centquatre-Paris, leads the curatorial team. Meanwhile, by 2028, a museum dedicated to Hector Guimard's Art Nouveau metro entrances will open at Hôtel Mezzara, funded by collector Fabien Choné and supported by Le Cercle Guimard. The Grand Paris Express project, financed with €35 billion, includes four new lines and 68 stations across 200 kilometers. In 2023, the project was the subject of an exhibition at the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine. Specific artist assignments include Mona Hatoum creating a light installation at Le Bourget station, Eva Jospin at Hôpital Bicêtre, Anselm Kiefer at Versailles-Chantiers, and Michelangelo Pistoletto at Champigny Centre with a neon phrase "Love Differences" in 16 languages.
