Paris: Grand Palais Éphémère, a Temporary Architectural Marvel
The Grand Palais Éphémère, a temporary structure designed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, has been erected on the Champ-de-Mars in Paris, directly facing the Eiffel Tower. Built to host events during the restoration of the historic Grand Palais, which began in March 2021, the 10,000-square-meter building features a double-vaulted curvilinear design that echoes the monumentality of its predecessor. The structure is constructed from sustainable materials: PEFC-certified wood, a mineral-based polymer cladding that uses 90% less energy than glass and is fully recyclable, and 100% renewable electricity. All components are modular and prefabricated for quick assembly and disassembly, with plans for reuse after the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The venue will host major events including Art Capital, Saut Hermès, Art Paris, the International Rare Book and Art Object Fair, the International Biennial of Arts and Crafts, FIAC, Paris Photo, and Chanel fashion shows, as well as Olympic trials. The author speculates whether the temporary structure might become permanent, like the Eiffel Tower.
