Paris Fall 2020: Cultural Season Amid Pandemic and FIAC Cancellation
Paris faces a challenging autumn 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic persists. Despite 35°C heat and reopened bars, restaurants, schools, and museums, infections rise. The French government mobilized €8 billion for cultural businesses between March and June 2020, yet the sector suffers. Tourism has collapsed: Île-de-France lost 16 million visitors and an estimated €7 billion in revenue since January. In summer, nearly 1 in 2 hotels closed; museums like the Louvre, Grand Palais, and Centre Pompidou saw no queues. September brings cautious recovery with school trips and vernissages. The Musée d'Orsay drew attention for a student's décolleté scandal and a Femen protest. The FIAC art fair was canceled last-minute due to health crisis, a major economic blow: in 2019, FIAC attracted 74,580 visitors and 199 galleries from 28 countries. Paris Photo is still scheduled for November at the Grand Palais, which will close for renovation from January 2021 to 2024, replaced by the 10,000 sqm Grand Palais Éphémère designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte on the Champ de Mars. Upcoming exhibitions include Giorgio de Chirico at the Orangerie (Sept 16–Dec 14), Sarah Moon at the Musée d'Art moderne de Paris (Sept 18–Jan 10), Cindy Sherman at Fondation Louis Vuitton (Sept 23–Jan 3), and Matisse en France at Centre Pompidou (Oct 21–Feb 22).
