Paris Celebrates Rodin Centenary with Grand Palais and Musée Rodin Exhibitions
Paris marks the centenary of Auguste Rodin's death with two major exhibitions. At the Grand Palais, 'Rodin. L’exposition du centenaire' runs from March 22 to July 31, 2017, featuring over 200 works by Rodin alongside pieces by artists he influenced, including Camille Claudel, Antoine Bourdelle, Constantin Brancusi, Picasso, Matisse, Giacometti, Joseph Beuys, Georg Baselitz, Antony Gormley, and Thomas Houseago. The show highlights the impact of Rodin's sculpture 'The Walking Man' (1877) on German artist Markus Lüpertz. Across the Seine, the Musée Rodin presents 'Kiefer Rodin' until October 22, 2017, focusing on Anselm Kiefer's response to Rodin's book 'Les Cathédrales de France' (1914). Kiefer created an artist's book from the manuscript, and the museum rearranged its collection to display lesser-known works that reveal shared aesthetic concerns between the two artists.
