Paris After Dark: 70 Years of Night Photography at Roger-Viollet

exhibition · 2026-05-18

The Galerie Roger-Viollet presents 'Paris, ouvert la nuit', an exhibition of seventy prints spanning seventy years of Parisian nightlife, from the early 20th century to the psychedelic clubs of the 1970s. The selection, drawn from the archives of the City of Paris and six photographers—Jean-Pierre Couderc, Pierre Jahan, François Kollar, Janine Niepce, Jack Nisberg, and René-Jacques—explores how artificial light reinvents the city as a theater. Long exposures create halos on empty squares, while flash captures the raw intimacy of bars, brasseries, cabarets, and fairgrounds. The exhibition also contextualizes Paris's identity as the 'City of Light', referencing its first public lighting in 1665 and early electric experiments in the mid-19th century. On view from June 11 to October 3, 2026, at 6 rue de Seine, Paris 6e.
