Paratroopers deploy to remote Tristan da Cunha for hantavirus response

other · 2026-05-11

In a historic operation, British paratroopers executed the first parachute drop of medical staff to Tristan da Cunha, the most isolated inhabited island globally, to address a suspected hantavirus case. On Friday, the UK Health Security Agency reported that a British citizen had left the cruise ship MV Hondius with a potential infection. A team comprising six paratroopers, an army nurse, and a Royal Air Force consultant parachuted onto the island, which lacks an airstrip and is typically reachable only by boat. Additionally, medical supplies and oxygen were delivered via airdrop. An RAF A400M transport aircraft journeyed from RAF Brize Norton to Ascension Island, assisted by an RAF Voyager, before heading to Tristan da Cunha, which has a population of 221 and is over 2,400 km from St Helena.
