Parata Tiberina performance celebrates World Water Day in Rome

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

On March 22, World Water Day, the MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts and the Flumen project premiered the video 'Tiberina' depicting the Parata Tiberina degli Inizi, a collective performance directed by visual artist Andrea Conte (Studio Andreco). Produced by Romaeuropa Festival in collaboration with Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Accademia Santa Cecilia, and Zètema for the Festa di Roma 2020 of Roma Capitale, the performance involved citizens, performers, and musicians. It started from Isola Tiberina along the Tiber River in central Rome, passing through Foro Boario to Basamento Aventino. Performers carried an amphora with waters collected from Isola Tiberina and flags depicting parts of the Tiber's course, moving counterflow along Lungotevere. The work, inspired by ancient Roman and pre-Roman myths, aims to shift from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism, promoting sustainable water management and Nature Based Solutions.
