Para Site presents sprawling Asia-Pacific exhibition 'A beast, a god, a line' in Hong Kong

exhibition · 2026-04-20

The exhibition 'A beast, a god, a line' opened at Para Site in Hong Kong on 17 March 2018, running through 20 May. Curated by Para Site director Cosmin Costinas, the show features work by 55 artists and artist groups, originally debuting at the Dhaka Art Summit. It explores maritime circulation and globalization in the Asia-Pacific region through themes including migration, decolonization, and the decline of liberal democracy. The exhibition required Para Site to hire additional space to accommodate its scale. Key works include Ines Doujak's 'Loomshuttles/Warpaths' (2010–18), which examines textiles, colonialism, and exploitation; Paul Pfeiffer's video 'Incarnator' (2018) linking Justin Bieber to Filipino Catholic saints; and Nguyen Trinh Thi's 'Letters from Panduranga' (2015) investigating the Cham Bani culture and the threatened historic heartland of the Champa kingdom. The show serves as a primer on current regional artistic concerns ahead of Art Basel Hong Kong.
