Paolo Vietti-Violi's Hippodromes Revolutionized Sports Architecture

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

Paolo Vietti-Violi (Gradisson, 1882 – Vogogna, 1965), an alumnus of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, was responsible for the design of more than thirty sports facilities and hippodromes, elevating racetracks to the status of architectural landmarks. His design for the Ippodromo Snai San Siro emerged victorious in a 1911 competition, showcasing a grandstand characterized by horizontal lines that foreshadowed European rationalism. Beneath the Cavallo di Leonardo statue, the GAMI at San Siro presents an interactive historical experience. In 1929, Raffaele Ruggiero bequeathed Lake Agnano for a racetrack, where Vietti-Violi harmonized rationalist architecture with the Campi Flegrei landscape. The Ippodromo di Agnano, inaugurated in 1935, is currently being renovated into a multipurpose facility. Additionally, Vietti-Violi designed the Ippodromo delle Capannelle and Ippodromo Snai Sesana, among others.
