Paolo Uccello's San Giorgio e il drago on loan to Fondazione Cini in Venice
The Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice has secured Paolo Uccello's "San Giorgio e il drago" on loan from the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris, as part of its ongoing "L'ospite a Palazzo" initiative. The exchange also sends Botticelli's "Il giudizio di Paride" to France for a September exhibition on the Florentine master. The painting, dating from the late Gothic to early Renaissance, depicts Saint George and the dragon with a striking landscape that shifts from rigorous Sienese style on the left to a tumultuous, dreamlike scene on the right, divided by a cave resembling a contemporary tensile structure. Luca Massimo Barbero, director of the Institute of Art History at Fondazione Cini, notes that art was the most powerful form of storytelling before virtual encounters and social media. The work is displayed in the Sala del Rinascimento of Palazzo Cini. Additionally, the exhibition "Piranesi Roma Basilico" on the upper floor has been expanded with eleven new etchings by Giambattista Piranesi and eleven photographs by Gabriele Basilico, originally commissioned for the 2010 exhibition "Le Arti di Piranesi." The pairing highlights the architects' shared sensitivity to image construction and their depiction of Rome's ruins as both imaginary and real.
