Paolo Masi's 1980s Works on View at Frittelli Arte Contemporanea in Florence

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The gallery Frittelli arte contemporanea in Florence is presenting 'Paolo Masi in Florence. Opere degli anni Ottanta,' a selection of large-format works by the 90-year-old Florentine painter Paolo Masi (born 1933). Curated by Fabio Cavallucci, the exhibition gathers almost all the pieces first shown in 1985 at Palazzo Vecchio's Sala d'Arme. Masi's practice is characterized by an analytical study of color as luminous and corpuscular matter, creating a noisy, dynamic surface that evokes both Seurat's pointillism and Pollock's dripping, but also the visual friction of television static. The artist has long been fascinated by this noise effect, which he sees as a metaphor for the continuous, imperfect synchronization of human history. The show runs at the gallery, with installation support from Cavallucci and gallerist Simone Frittelli.
