Paolo Castaldi's Graphic Novel Homage to Fabrizio De André's 'La buona novella'
Italian cartoonist Paolo Castaldi (born 1982, Milan) has released a graphic novel adaptation of Fabrizio De André's 1970 concept album 'La buona novella'. The book, published by Feltrinelli, transforms each track into sequential art. Castaldi obtained permission from the De André Foundation to use all song lyrics. In an interview, he explains the project had been germinating since he was 16-17, after first hearing the album. He approached the adaptation with humility but maintained his personal vision, explicitly updating the setting from Christ's time to the present day to underscore the album's contemporary political relevance. Castaldi, known for illustrated biographies of Diego Maradona and Gian Maria Volonté, sees his role as revealing the complexity behind public figures often judged superficially. The graphic novel is 114 pages, priced €16.
