Paolo Canevari Podcast: Art as Resistance in Dark Times
In the latest episode of Artribune's podcast 'Monologhi al Telefono', artist Paolo Canevari (born 1963 in Rome) reflects on the meaning of art and life during uncertain times. Canevari, a fourth-generation artist, began his artistic research in 1988, drawing from shared cultural imagery to forge a deeply personal space. His works blend historical and private memory with social, geopolitical, religious, and ecological issues, creating a new poetics of denunciation aimed at fostering renewed awareness. Canevari argues that art preserves answers to humanity's oldest questions, saves from life's ephemerality, conquers death, and endures, encapsulating the very value of existence. Known for his use of inner tube and tire rubber since the early 1990s, Canevari works across sculpture, installation, drawing, and video. After nearly fourteen years living and working in New York, he now resides in Rome and teaches at the Accademia di Belle Arti. Recently, for the OFF project at Museo Novecento in Florence, he presented a work featuring the phrase 'Ho Fame' (I'm Hungry) painted in white on the windshield of a black Rolls Royce, creating an aberrant message between wealth and poverty. He currently has a solo exhibition at Palazzo Collicola, in the rooms of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna G. Carandente in Spoleto.
