Paola Pezzi's 'Passaggi di stato' at Gaggenau DesignElementi Hub Milano

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Gaggenau DesignElementi Hub in Milan hosts 'Passaggi di stato', a solo exhibition by Italian artist Paola Pezzi, as part of the Materiabilia project. Curated by Sabino Maria Frassà, the show presents eighteen iconic works spanning over thirty years of Pezzi's career. Born in Brescia in 1963, Pezzi moved to Milan in the 1980s, studied at Accademia di Brera, and collaborated with sculptor Luciano Fabro and Zeno Birolli. Influenced by Arte Povera, she debuted in the 1980s using materials like polyurethane, foam rubber, and fabrics. In 2000, she incorporated cork, wood, felt, and everyday objects such as straws, matches, toothpicks, pencils, fringes, and cotton swabs. The exhibition explores the transformation of matter and ideas, emphasizing the whiteness of materials and the evolution of her work from rejecting light to generating and moving light, even in black pieces. Pezzi blurs the line between painting and sculpture, fusing two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. Movement is a central theme, both within individual works and across her career, with sculptures appearing formless and continuously expanding. The exhibition is promoted by Gaggenau, a high-end German appliance brand, and Cramum, a non-profit supporting artistic excellence since 2012, at Corso Magenta in Milan.
