Pao Houa Her's First Major Monograph Explores Hmong Diaspora Through Illusion and Loss
Pao Houa Her, an artist of Hmong descent born in Laos in 1982, is set to unveil her inaugural significant monograph, titled "My grandfather turned into a tiger ... and other illusions," which will be published by Aperture on January 23, 2024. This 124-page paperback encompasses four prominent series, including a reinterpretation of her family's narrative and a controversy involving defrauded Hmong elders. It showcases both black-and-white still lifes and vibrant digital backgrounds. The book features distinctive covers and contributions from writers such as Godfre Leung, Kong Pheng Pha, Audrey Sands, Mai Der Vang, and Kao Kalia Yang. Her, who earned her MFA from Yale in 2012 and her BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2009, is currently an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2023.
