Pantone Names Viva Magenta Color of the Year 2023

other · 2026-04-27

Pantone Color Institute has selected Viva Magenta 18-1750 as the Color of the Year 2023. Described as a "powerful and stimulating" red, it encourages experimentation and self-expression. The color draws inspiration from the cochineal insect, one of the most precious natural dyes. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone Color Institute, stated that Viva Magenta reconnects us to primal matter and helps build inner strength. In collaboration with Art Basel, Pantone organized an immersive exhibition on December 3, 2022, focusing on the relationship between art, technology, and science. The Color of the Year initiative began in 1999, with Cerulean chosen for 2000, a shade that later appeared in the film "The Devil Wears Prada." Viva Magenta is intended to bring people back to nature in a technology-driven era.
