Pandolfini auction of modern and contemporary art achieves strong results in Milan

Pandolfini's auction of Modern and Contemporary Art on June 22 in Milan saw over 140 lots, many from private collections, achieve strong results. Top lots included Arnaldo Pomodoro's bronze sculpture 'Sfera con sfera' (30 cm diameter), a reduced version of the 1996 piece at the UN in New York, selling for €225,000. Antonio Ligabue's 'Autoritratto (con farfalla bianca)' (1953), appearing for the first time on the market, sold for €175,000 against an estimate of €40,000. Luigi Ontani's glazed ceramic 'Dante' (1998) tripled its estimate to €81,000. Works by Giorgio de Chirico and Lucio Fontana also performed well. International artists included Bernard Buffet, whose 'Rue de village' (1970) sold for €100,000, Andy Warhol's 'Mao Tse Tung' (1972) at €37,500, and Sonia Delaunay's 'Rythme coloré n. 5' (1942) at over €32,000. The auction featured a special section dedicated to the collection of Giovanni Testori and Alain Toubas, the Parisian critic and gallerist who died in 2021.
