Paloma Contreras Lomas's 'Disco Inferno' Debuts at Gasworks

Gasworks in London presents 'Disco Inferno', the first European solo exhibition by Mexican artist Paloma Contreras Lomas, running from 1 October to 13 December 2026. The exhibition transforms the gallery into a grotesque, theatrical vision of Mexico's political and cultural underworld, drawing on Dante's 'Inferno' and the concept of Latin American Antigones. Contreras Lomas works across installation, painting, sculpture, and moving image to examine how historic and contemporary violence in Mexico is shaped by popular culture, political rhetoric, and media narratives. The installation features room-scale murals populated by flesh-eating creatures and goblins, plush fuzzy sculptures, a stylized tzompantli (skull rack), and a new moving-image work with an original soundtrack by Alejandro Nuñez (ZutZut). The exhibition references episodes from Mexican history including the Mexican Revolution, the Dirty War, NAFTA, and the ongoing drug war. The artist describes her visual language as 'Mexican Baroque', citing influences from Jim Henson's 'The Dark Crystal', 'Tales from the Crypt', and Sayak Valencia's 'Gore Capitalism'.
