Palladio documentary closes Magnitudo Film's art cinema season

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

The seventh and final art documentary of Magnitudo Film's season, 'Palladio', will screen in Italian cinemas on May 20, 21, and 22. Directed by an unspecified filmmaker, the 8K film explores the life and legacy of Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, whose designs influenced iconic buildings like the White House and the U.S. Capitol. The documentary interweaves historical context with contemporary interpretations, featuring interviews with modern 'Palladians' who study and preserve his work. It highlights Palladio's unique approach to architectural surveying: he not only drew buildings like the Pantheon but also reconstructed their construction methods, a first in architectural history. The film also addresses the question posed by young students in the documentary: whether Palladio's architecture is neutral. Produced by Magnitudo Film in collaboration with Chili, the film follows earlier documentaries on Bernini, dinosaurs, Mathera, Leonardo, Wunderkammer, and Canova. At a presentation event at the Venice Film Festival, Professor Antonio Foscari noted the challenge of representing Palladio's abstract, iconic art, while Magnitudo Film founder Francesco Invernizzi mentioned filming in Veneto and the United States, including Thomas Jefferson's home. The documentary aims to be a comprehensive lesson in architecture, art, and culture.
