Palestinian Initiative Opens Library in Gaza from Salvaged Books

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-30

On April 22, France 24 broadcast a video showing the opening of a library in Rimal, a neighborhood three kilometers from central Gaza City. The library, named after the phoenix, houses approximately 6,000 salvaged books including scientific, fiction, and children's literature. A group of young Palestinians recovered the books from the rubble of private homes and dozens of destroyed libraries that existed in Gaza before October 2023. The rescued books were cleaned and partially restored. The library attracts many visitors, especially young people, and also provides access to digital archives.
