Palestinian Art at 1974 Baghdad Biennial Debated in Newly Translated Documents

publication · 2026-04-24

Alessandra Amin introduces translations of two 1974 texts from the Moroccan cultural journal Intégral, which dedicated a special edition to the first Arab Biennial of Fine Arts held in Baghdad. The documents, by Moroccan artist Mohammed Chabâa and Italian-Moroccan art historian Toni Maraini, critique the Palestinian pavilion at the biennial for prioritizing folk idioms over images of armed struggle, despite viewing Palestine as an ideal arena for decolonial 'combat art.' Amin's introduction situates these critiques within Moroccan and Palestinian discourses on heritage and colonialism, arguing that the Palestinian context blurs the distinction between 'folk' and 'combat' art in ways unfamiliar to Casablanca-based intellectuals. The article appears in ARTMargins, Volume 12, Issue 3, pp. 102-112, published by MIT Press.
