Palermo's Stand Florio Liberty Building Reborn as Contemporary Hub
The Stand Florio, a Liberty-style building designed by architect Ernesto Basile in 1905 for entrepreneur Vincenzo Florio jr, has been restored and transformed into the Stand Florio Contemporary Hub in Palermo, Italy. Originally intended as part of a larger seaside sports complex that was never completed, the building later served as a pigeon shooting range, a warehouse during WWII, a solarium, and fell into disuse and illegal occupation. In 2016, the Italian State Property Agency (Demanio) tendered a concession, won by Servizitalia, a Sicilian congress organization company, which secured a 50-year lease. Restoration took 11 months (December 2017 to November 2018) under the supervision of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Culturali e Ambientali di Palermo, led by architect Giuseppe Vaiana. The central building underwent conservative restoration, while an adjacent structure became the Caffè Targa. A 3,000 sqm garden dedicated to Donna Franca Florio features over sixty plant species. The hub now hosts exhibitions, concerts, and performances in a 300-seat arena. For the opening, artist EPVS installed the sculpture Through the Door in the garden. The project is part of broader efforts to revitalize Palermo's southern coast, near the Ecomuseo Mare Memoria Viva. Mayor Leoluca Orlando praised it as an example of public-private collaboration.
