Palermo Marks 50 Years Since Caravaggio Theft with Caravaggio50 Festival
Fifty years after Caravaggio's 'Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence' was stolen from Palermo's Oratorio di San Lorenzo, the city is set to host Caravaggio50, a ten-day celebration from October 10 to 20, 2019. The artwork, painted in 1600, was taken between October 12 and 17, 1969, and was found to be missing on October 18. In 2017, the Anti-Mafia Commission, under Rosi Bindi's leadership, reopened the investigation, determining that the painting still exists, albeit in pieces, and has been transported to Switzerland. The festival will feature exhibitions, conferences, screenings, concerts, and performances aimed at the 're-materialization' of lost artworks. A 3D replica by Factum Arte is displayed at the Oratorio, while the Museo Abatellis will showcase 'The Return of Lost Masterpieces' with seven replicas and the 'Next' series featuring eight commissioned works.
