Palazzo Strozzi's Jeff Koons Retrospective Inspires Four Spotify Playlists

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in Florence has launched a musical project titled 'I'm a Koons Fan' to accompany the Jeff Koons retrospective 'Shine,' running until January 30, 2022. Curated by Salotto Studio, the initiative comprises four thematic playlists published monthly on the museum's Spotify profile and website, featuring about sixty tracks that explore pop aesthetics and the dichotomy between being and appearing, central to Koons's work. The first playlist, 'Luxury and Degradation,' includes 19 songs from the 1970s to the 1990s, such as David Bowie's 'Sound and Vision' (1977) and The Stooges' 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' (1969), blending styles under themes of glitter and uncomfortable truths. Upcoming playlists are 'Celebration' (from November 24, 2021), 'Hulk Elvis' (from December 22, 2021), featuring hybrids like Simian Mobile Disco's 'Audacity of Huge' and Artic Monkeys' 'Fluorescent Adolescent,' and 'Gazing Ball' (from January 19, 2022), a cosmopolitan mix with Lady Gaga's 'Art Pop' and Lana del Rey's 'Million Dollar Man.' The project reflects Koons's lifelong blending of high and low culture.
