Palazzo Strozzi's 'American Art 1961–2001' Surveys Five Decades of US Art

exhibition · 2026-04-27

In Florence, Palazzo Strozzi, in partnership with the Walker Art Center, showcases 'American Art 1961–2001', spanning from John F. Kennedy's presidency to the events of 9/11. Curated by Arturo Galansino and Vincenzo de Bellis, this exhibition follows previous shows like 'Americans in Florence' (2012) and 'The Great Art of the Guggenheim' (2016). It features Joseph Cornell's boxes inspired by Yuri Gagarin's 1961 space flight, alongside works by Mark Rothko, Louise Nevelson, and others. Pop Art highlights include Robert Indiana, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein, while minimalist pieces by Sol LeWitt are displayed without labels. Bruce Nauman's conceptual works critique art institutions, and social themes are explored through Barbara Kruger’s art. The exhibition began in 2021.
