Palazzo Punzi Reopens as Museum of Contemporary Ceramics in Vietri sul Mare

Palazzo Punzi, a former municipal nursery in Vietri sul Mare, has reopened as the Museo della Ceramica Contemporanea, inaugurated on December 4 with the Premio Viaggio attraverso la Ceramica. The award brings together local artisans, young Italian ceramists, and international names, fostering generational and geographic exchange. Finalists exhibited in a collective show at the palace. The museum aims to valorize local ceramics in a national and international context, returning the space to the community as a hub of prestige and research. This spring, the museum will open its first solo exhibition dedicated to Mimmo Paladino, curated by artistic director Rita Raimondi. The Premio also includes a Special Mention CNA Salerno – Giovani category, awarding a solo show by 2026 to winner Marco Lonardi, produced by Studio Opera LTB. The initiative is part of a broader trend in Campania, such as the Premio Meridiana at Museo Madre in Naples, supporting emerging Southern Italian artists. Vietri sul Mare, with fewer than 7,000 inhabitants, uses ceramics as a tool for collective identity, linking local craftsmanship to the global contemporary scene. The town's ceramic tradition historically evolved through exchanges with Castelli, the Eastern Mediterranean, Byzantine influences, and other Italian centers like Albisola, Sicily, and central Italy.
