Palazzo Odescalchi's Art Losses Spark Parliamentary Inquiry

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

A parliamentary inquiry led by Vincenza Bruno Bossio of the Democratic Party has brought to light the systematic depletion of Palazzo Odescalchi in Rome, including unauthorized restorations, collection dismemberment, and illegal export of artworks. The palace, a Baroque masterpiece with a facade by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, has seen masterpieces like Caravaggio's 'Conversion of Saul' (one of the last privately held Caravaggios) and works by Saturnino Gatti, Marcantonio Franceschini, and Gaudenzio Ferrari sold at international auctions in London and New York. The inquiry lists missing items: a 1566 painting by monogrammist MO sold to Trynity Fine Art in London; Saturnino Gatti's 'Resurrection' sold at Christie's New York in 1996; and 31 sketchbooks from Queen Christina of Sweden, one of which was seized at Fiumicino customs. The palace is owned by Giulia Odescalchi, managed with Gabriele Baldini, a convicted tax evader. The inquiry criticizes the Soprintendenza for failing to protect the collection, unlike similar Roman palaces. Bossio requests preventive seizure to halt further damage.
