Palazzo Nardini: The Renaissance Palace That Became Italy's First Feminist House
In 1976, the Movimento di liberazione della donna took over Rome's Palazzo Nardini, which had been vacant since 1964, establishing Italy's inaugural Casa delle donne. Located on Via del Governo Vecchio, this space served as a 'city of women' until 1984, when they relocated to the Buon Pastore complex, later recognized in 1992 as the Casa Internazionale delle Donne, which houses Archivia, a feminist archive. During its time at Nardini, the palace facilitated self-help groups, Italy's first anti-violence center in February 1977, and various cultural initiatives, including the 1976 'Riprendiamoci la notte' march and the 1978 film 'Io sono mia.' Owner Angela Armellini's conservative restoration will erase graffiti but intends to recreate it with modern artists.
