Palazzo Maffei launches immersive audio experience Opening Night

digital · 2026-04-27

Palazzo Maffei Casa Museo in Verona has introduced Opening Night, an immersive 'autotheatre' experience created by actress and director Silvia Mercuriali. Visitors wear headphones and follow recorded instructions to navigate the museum's rooms in search of an elusive party, heard but not seen. The 25-minute journey begins outside the palazzo and unfolds through the piano nobile. Binaural recording technology makes sounds appear to come from the surrounding environment in 360 degrees, enhanced by Schumann's music. Unlike a traditional audioguide, Opening Night avoids didacticism, aiming to place the visitor at the center of the museum experience. Deputy director Vanessa Carlon stated the project offers a fresh way to engage with the permanent collection, even for repeat visitors. The experience is available for purchase at the museum's ticket office.
