Palazzo Grimani announces 2019-2021 season blending classical and contemporary art
The Museo di Palazzo Grimani in Venice has unveiled its upcoming exhibition season, mixing ancient art with contemporary input. In May 2019, the museum will host the return, after 430 years, of the classical statue collection once owned by Patriarch Giovanni Grimani. The collection, housed in the family palace until 1596, was donated to the Venetian Republic. The exhibition, curated by Daniele Ferrara (director of the Polo museale del Veneto) and Toto Bergamo Rossi (director of Venetian Heritage), runs from May 2019 until 2021. It explores Renaissance collecting and the history of the palace, which was originally home to Antonio Grimani and features Venetian cinquecento architecture with Tusco-Roman decorative elements. The Tribuna, built by Giovanni Grimani to house his ancient artifacts, will again display the collection. Also in May, a retrospective titled "PITTURA/PANORAMA. Paintings by Helen Frankenthaler, 1952-1992" will open, organized by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation with Venetian Heritage and Gagosian, curated by John Elderfield (chief curator emeritus at MoMA). The exhibition marks Frankenthaler's return to Venice after her 1966 US Pavilion show at the Biennale. This follows a 2017 monographic show of Beverly Barkat, highlighting the museum's ongoing dialogue with contemporary creativity.
