Palazzo Fortuny Reopens in Venice as Permanent Museum After Flood Restoration

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

After undergoing restoration, Palazzo Fortuny in Venice has reopened its doors, having been affected by the Acqua Granda flood on November 12, 2019, which compromised the ground floor. Thanks to a €500,000 donation from PAM Panorama, the original floor has been elevated by 16 centimeters. Now functioning as a permanent museum under the Fondazione Musei Civici Venezia, it highlights the life and creations of Mariano Fortuny. The reinstallation was orchestrated by Pier Luigi Pizzi, Gabriella Belli, and Chiara Squarcina. Visitors can find a ticket office, bookshop, and artworks by Lawrence Carroll and David Simpson on the ground floor, while the piano nobile showcases Fortuny's passions, including a painted winter garden. The second floor, set to open in June, will provide views of ateliers and collections.
