Palazzo Fabroni in Pistoia Opens New Artist-Designed Garden

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Palazzo Fabroni in Pistoia will inaugurate a new garden on July 21, designed by architects Alessio Gai and Michele Fiesoli with artistic consultation by Federico Gori and technical support from engineers Maria Chiara Mannelli, Riccardo Caramelli, and Lorenzo Barbieri. The project originated from a competition launched by the Municipality of Pistoia in summer 2015 for young professionals, funded by the municipality, European funds, and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e Pescia. In spring 2016, an exhibition presented the selected proposals to the public. The winning team created a garden that references Renaissance Italian garden design, using a 'point' motif in various sizes and gradients to form a green punctuation that, viewed from above, evokes a traditional layout. A central circular space, where a fountain would typically be, allows visitor passage and artwork display. The garden will be integrated into the museum's colonnade and is intended to become the main entrance. Palazzo Fabroni, named after the noble family that inhabited it since 1842, houses a collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by Mario Nigro, Agenore Fabbri, and pieces from Arte Povera, Minimal Art, conceptual art, and visual poetry. Currently, until September 2021, the museum is hosting a solo exhibition by Marinella Senatore titled 'A salir le stelle.'
