Palazzo Colonna in Rome opens four new rooms in the Padiglione Pio

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Palazzo Colonna, a historic Roman palace that has been a private residence of the Colonna family for centuries, has opened four new rooms to the public, forming the Padiglione Pio. The rooms are the Sala della Cornucopia, Sala del Baldacchino, Galleriola, and Sala delle Maioliche. They feature tapestries from the Gobelins manufactory depicting the Stories of Alexander the Great, designed by Charles Le Brun. The palace, managed by the Fondazione Palazzo Colonna, is known for its art collection including works by Bronzino, Michele di Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio, Cosmè Tura, and others. The Galleria Colonna, with frescoes by Giovanni Coli and Filippo Gherardi (1675–1678), is a highlight. The palace also has a terraced garden with views of Rome and ancient fragments like the Frontespizio di Nerone. The new rooms are named after Don Alfonso Pio Falcó, husband of Princess Sveva Colonna. The palace is open to the public on Saturday mornings, with group visits by appointment on other days.
