Palazzo Collicola Unveils New Permanent Collection Installation in Spoleto

Palazzo Collicola in Spoleto has inaugurated a new permanent collection installation of its Galleria d'Arte Moderna Giovanni Carandente. The project, directed by Saverio Verini with scientific consultancy from Arianna Paragallo and architect Filippo Loy, reorganizes the museum's holdings into sixteen sections. The itinerary begins with Leoncillo and the Gruppo di Spoleto, then moves to the Premio Spoleto, established in the 1950s, which fostered dialogue between Milanese and central-southern Italian art scenes. A key section revisits the 1962 exhibition "Sculture nella città" curated by Giovanni Carandente, featuring works, sketches, and photographs by Ugo Mulas. The installation highlights artists linked to Spoleto, including Beverly Pepper, Alexander Calder, Sol LeWitt, and gallerist Marilena Bonomo. A room is dedicated to Carandente himself, with donated works and archival materials. Further sections cover the Roman post-war and 1980s scenes, from abstraction to the Scuola di San Lorenzo, with monographic rooms for Alberto Burri and Domenico Gnoli. The final section presents recent acquisitions, including works by Jacopo Miliani (acquired through the PAC 2024 program of the Italian Ministry of Culture) and Bekhbaatar Enktur (donated after a 2023 exhibition). Architect Filippo Loy emphasized the design's focus on visual dialogue between rooms, using magnetic panels for flexibility.
