Palazzo Barberini Celebrates Pope Urban VIII with Landmark Exhibition

At the Palazzo Barberini in Rome, a significant exhibition marks the 400th anniversary of Maffeo Barberini's election as Pope Urban VIII (1568–1644). Organized by Maurizia Cicconi, Flaminia Gennari Santori, and Sebastian Schütze, this display brings together over eighty artworks from various public and private collections in Italy and beyond, created during his papacy. Urban VIII, celebrated as the foremost patron pope of the 17th century, was a sophisticated poet and statesman who promoted the Baroque movement through renowned artists such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Pietro da Cortona, and Nicolas Poussin. The exhibition reconstructs the Barberini collection, showcasing notable pieces like Bernini's bronze bust of Urban VIII (1658) and a gilded wooden harp reflecting Lanfranco's depiction of Venus, emphasizing the blend of Renaissance classicism and Baroque flair that characterized Urban VIII's artistic vision.
