PalaTiziano in Rome reopens after five-year renovation

The Palazzetto dello Sport, now called PalaTiziano, in Rome reopened on October 15, 2023, after five years of closure for modernization. Designed by Pier Luigi Nervi and Annibale Vitellozzi, it was the first of Nervi's four Olympic venues for the 1960 Rome Olympics. Currently seating 2,500, capacity will increase to 3,500 after official inauguration in January 2024. The venue will host home games for Roma Volley Club (women's volleyball) and Luiss basketball (Serie A2). Rome's Councillor for Major Events, Sport, Tourism and Fashion, Alessandro Onorato, emphasized the need to also restore the Stadio Flaminio, another Nervi-designed Olympic structure. The Fondazione Pier Luigi Nervi Project, led by Marco Nervi, has collaborated with Sapienza University of Rome and the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma on a conservation plan for the Flaminio, funded by the Getty Foundation, and hopes for a similarly sensitive restoration. The PalaTiziano has been under protection of the Soprintendenza since March 2021, recognized as a paradigmatic work for its architectural, structural, and technological achievements.
