Palais de Tokyo to Open New Bookstore and Restaurant in Spring 2017

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

The Palais de Tokyo in Paris's 16th arrondissement is set to launch a new bookstore and restaurant in spring 2017, following a 2015 call for proposals. The bookstore, replacing the existing one by Pascale Brun d'Arre, will be operated by Walther König & Cahiers d'Art, occupying 450 square meters. Walther König, with over 40 outlets across Europe, partners with Cahiers d'Art, a publishing house founded in 1926 in Paris that revived in 2012 after decades of inactivity. The architectural design for the bookstore is by Office, a Brussels-based firm. The restaurant, created by Quixotic Projects—known for Parisian venues like Candelaria, Vetro, Mary Celeste, and Eroe—will feature a cocktail bar and food court, opening in June 2017. It replaces the iconic TokyoEat, a longtime art-world meeting point closing in mid-December 2016. The restaurant's architecture is by Lina Ghotmeh and Le Graphiquants. From January 16, 2017, Quixotic will collaborate with existing Mr. Blue to offer snacks and brunch until the new restaurant opens. The restaurant aims to become a neighborhood landmark, designed by DGT, a Parisian studio that recently won the Grand Prix Afex 2016 for the Estonian National Museum, awarded by the French Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine.
