Palais de Tokyo in Paris to Close for Over a Year of Renovations
The Palais de Tokyo in Paris will temporarily close for at least 18 months starting in spring 2027, with a renovation budget of €46 million. The contemporary art center, housed in the Art Deco building built for the 1937 International Exposition, requires structural consolidation and safety upgrades. A 2022 French Court of Auditors report flagged design and maintenance defects compromising safety, recommending roof replacement, waterproofing, and electrical system updates. Despite periodic investments since the 2000–2012 Lacaton & Vassal renovation, the museum can no longer afford piecemeal fixes. The closure mirrors the Centre Pompidou's current shutdown until 2030. The 2026 exhibition season is confirmed, including a group show on French-American contemporary art relations and retrospectives on Melvin Edwards and Caroline Kent, closing mid-February. A spring 2026 program is forthcoming.
