Palace Opens Shanghai Store Inspired by Traditional Chinese Garden
British skate brand Palace opened its second Asian store in Shanghai, China, in 2025, following its Seoul debut in February 2025. Located in the Zhangyuan complex in Jing'an District, the store occupies a late-19th-century shikumen building originally part of 'Zhang's Weichun Garden' owned by Zhang Shuhe. The exterior retains the original façade, with Palace's tri-ferg logo by Fergus Purcell (inspired by Oscar Reutersvärd's Penrose Triangle) angled downward from the roof. A bulldog sculpture and a covered pond referencing traditional Shanghai gardens greet visitors. Inside, LED columns, stone tiles, limestone, gold and red accents evoke regional materials and Chinese rituals. A central pavilion-inspired structure references military watchtowers repurposed as leisure spaces in private gardens. Co-founder Gareth Skewis noted the brand's 20-year history with China and the evolution of its skate scene. Exclusive merchandise includes a 'Shang-Hi' motif and rabbit mascot inspired by the Chinese zodiac, plus graphics referencing the Oriental Pearl Tower. Palace co-founders Lev Tanju and Gareth Skewis originally conceived the brand in 2009 at London's Southbank Centre undercroft.
