Paint It Black Redesigns Castello di Rivoli Bookshop

Paint It Black, an independent art publishing house founded in Turin just one year ago, has redesigned the bookshop of the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea in Turin. Working with artists Stefano Bongiorno and Eugenio Rossi, the publisher created two exhibition islands and a lounge area for browsing magazines and books. The new store is framed by a calendar of events, lectures, and presentations aimed at promoting experimentation, discussion, and exchange in art publishing. The inaugural intervention, titled Nouveaux Phonogrammes, is a collective mail art project curated by Achille Filipponi. Over 200 international artists and curators contributed works addressing the theme of war in all its senses. All contributions were presented in the bookstore and will later be collected in a publication by Paint It Black. The publisher also selected artist books and works from the Castello di Rivoli library (over 47,000 titles) for display in adjacent spaces, creating a dynamic showcase. Additionally, some Multipli—limited editions of books and small works commissioned by the museum from exhibiting artists—are on display in the store. Curator Achille Filipponi described the project as a collective device involving diverse artistic and literary practices, culminating in a book. Participants sent faxes to a given phone number, generating a video display that will expand until the book's publication.
