Paesaggisensibili's Photographic Report on Malmö's Transformation

exhibition · 2026-04-27

During an artist residency at Malmö University, the collective Paesaggisensibili developed a photographic project focusing on the city's outermost ring road area. The research critically examines landscape changes over recent decades. Malmö is geographically compact, socially and economically segregated, with 183 nationalities and half the population under 35. After industrial decline, the city rebirthed through creativity and innovation, driven by the bridge, the new university campus, and the conversion of Västra Hamnen port into a residential area. The city grows by over 3,000 people annually but still has one of Sweden's highest unemployment rates. The project explores various urban zones: Kierseberg, a historic working-class neighborhood; areas where post-industrial spaces host immigrant entrepreneurship and cultural activities; and public housing districts from the 1960s-70s. Gentrification pressures threaten, and despite plans to reduce land consumption, the city expands onto agricultural land and green areas, creating new centers like Hyllie. The resulting public exhibition is used by the city's planning department to engage citizens in critical dialogue.
