Padua's Oratorio di San Giorgio gets 3D digital twin for preservation
The Oratorio di San Giorgio in Padua, a 14th-century chapel and UNESCO World Heritage site since 2021, now has a digital twin created by Veneto-based company Gemmlab. The 3D model, based on high-resolution photographs and geolocalized mapping of the entire surface, aims to provide images and data for promotion, study, and conservation of the architectural and pictorial work. The oratorio was originally built as a sepulchral chapel for the Lupi di Soragna family, with frescoes commissioned by Bonifacio Lupi from Altichiero da Zevio, who also painted the Cappella di San Giacomo in the nearby Basilica del Santo. The Veneranda Arca di S.Antonio, the entity responsible for the conservation of the Basilica del Santo and adjacent buildings, hopes the initiative can be replicated for other UNESCO-listed fresco cycles in Padua and their host sites.
