Padua Airport Gino Allegri to Become Cultural Hub with Hangar Renovation

architecture-design · 2026-05-19

Padua's Gino Allegri Airport, historically used for military purposes, is undergoing a transformation into a cultural hub. Since December 2024, the Terminal Urbano, a multifunctional space managed by Heron Air (which holds a 20-year concession since 2021), has hosted exhibitions, events, and festivals. Now, a second phase involves the renovation of former military hangars, set to begin by 2026. The project includes the Himmelmann exhibition space for temporary shows and permanent works like Sergio Rodella's Icaro. Collaborations with local institutions include a partnership with the IUAV University of Venice, where over 100 interior design students reimagined one hangar as a case study, culminating in a student competition presented at the fourth Microfestival dell'abitare (May 13–16, 2026). The renovation will cover five hangars and ancillary structures, demolishing former helicopter offices, refurbishing the first hangar, and restoring the ex-Aeroclub building. Some spaces will be sold to private entities, while others will be dedicated to public, non-profit, and educational projects.
