Pace Gallery Opens Second Seoul Space with Sam Gilliam Retrospective

Pace Gallery will open a second location in Seoul on May 27, 2021, occupying two floors of the Le Beige Building in the Hannam-dong district. The new 790-square-meter space, designed by Minsuk Cho of Mass Studies (winner of the 2014 Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale), features Korean design elements such as jute screens and wooden details. The inaugural exhibition is a retrospective of Sam Gilliam, marking his debut in Asia, comprising nine new paintings that revisit his Color Field and Abstract Expressionist style with new materials and techniques. The show runs until July 10, then travels to Pace's Hong Kong location at H Queen's. Youngjoo Lee, formerly Senior Director at Pace for six years, will lead the new Seoul space. Pace first opened in Seoul in 2017, pioneering the Hannam-dong district as an art hub, now home to Phillips auction house, Gana Art Nineone, p21, Bhak, and VSF. The nearby Leeum Samsung Museum is reopening after a major renovation. Marc Glimcher, Pace President and CEO, stated that Seoul's cultural investments and growing popularity drove the expansion.
