Pablo Bronstein Curates Chatsworth House Objects at Nottingham Contemporary

exhibition · 2026-04-20

In 2015, artist Pablo Bronstein both designed and curated an exhibition at Nottingham Contemporary and Chatsworth House, which has been the residence of the Dukes of Devonshire for more than 500 years. This exhibition contrasted historic baroque items, such as boulle marquetry cabinets and silver designs, with modern environments, delving into the concepts of the new and the old. Notable pieces included a solid silver chandelier, a sketch by Peter Lely, and Roman marble relics. Bronstein also crafted a vision of fictional Roman funerary monuments and showcased the worn coronation thrones of George IV and William IV. He reflects on how classicism is viewed in contemporary art and examines the National Trust's methods for historic homes and their adaptations for tourism. This article was published in the September 2015 edition of ArtReview.
