Pablo Atchugarry's Monumental Sculptures Take Over Lucca's Historic Center

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Forty-five monumental sculptures by Uruguayan artist Pablo Atchugarry (born Montevideo, 1954) have been installed across Lucca's historic center for the exhibition 'Il risveglio della Natura' (The Awakening of Nature), curated by GianGuido Grassi. The public show, organized by Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca, Fondazione Lucca Sviluppo, and Associazione Start – Open your eyes with support from the Comune di Lucca, features marble, bronze, and wood works placed in piazza San Martino, the Agorà, piazza San Michele, Porta San Pietro, and on the walls near the baluardo di San Frediano. Indoor displays at the Chiesa dei Servi (ten wood works) and Palazzo delle Esposizioni (Carrara white marble, Belgian black marble, Portuguese pink marble) complement the outdoor pieces. Atchugarry described his marbles as 'children of the mountain' that 'have legs and acquire a life of their own,' and his vertical works as 'invocations' to perceive the universe's energy. The exhibition runs until September 4.
