Ozmo creates mural in memory of Willy Monteiro Duarte in Paliano

artist · 2026-04-27

Street artist Ozmo has completed a large mural in Paliano, Italy, honoring Willy Monteiro Duarte, a 21-year-old Cape Verdean man killed in a racially motivated attack on September 6, 2020. The initiative was promoted by Vanity Fair, whose director Simone Marchetti invited Ozmo to create a permanent tribute. The mural, located in Piazzale Aldo Moro, was inaugurated on September 15, 2020. Ozmo chose a photograph of Willy smiling, with hands adjusting his collar, rendered in a hyperrealistic style with increased brightness and a golden background evoking sacred imagery. An aureole above the initial of Willy's name was added at the request of his friends. The artist waived his fee, donating it to charity. The mural also appears on the cover of Vanity Fair issue 38, titled "Mai più."
