Özlem Günyol & Mustafa Kunt Debut at Dirimart London with Political Works

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Dirimart London presents 'If you wanna go outside, get inside', the first exhibition by Özlem Günyol & Mustafa Kunt at the gallery's London space, running from 5 March to 11 April 2026. The show features sculpture, performance, video, and installation that critique the normalization of political violence, surveillance, and eroded public-private boundaries. A performance titled 'The Opening in Mayfair' (2026) uses a detective whose identity is unknown even to the artists, inspired by the London Underground announcement 'See it. Say it. Sorted.' The sculptural work 'The Dirty Work' (2026) responds to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's June 2025 use of 'die Drecksarbeit' regarding Israel's attacks on Iran; the word transforms into ammunition when rotated. Works addressing unjust detention in Turkey include 'I didn't like these colours!' (2026), a palette from police uniforms and prison cells, and 'Surrounded' (2026), a mural the size of a single-occupancy prison cell in Turkey. '(at) the same time' (2026) uses the artists' heartbeats for self-portrait videos, while 'Day by Day' (2026) employs hapishane işi (prison work) bead crochet to mark a year. 'An Anecdote: The Other' (2020) flashes 'Free Osman Kavala' in Morse code via a malfunctioning lamp, and 'Right' (2015) assembles the Turkish word 'hak' (right) thirty-six times from the constitution.
