Oxford and King's College London Remove Sackler Name from Buildings and Institutes

institutional · 2026-04-24

The University of Oxford has severed ties with the Sackler family, removing their name from the Sackler Library, two galleries at the Ashmolean Museum, and three staff positions. The Sackler Library is now the Bodleian Art, Archaeology and Ancient World Library. The Ashmolean's donor board will retain the Sackler name for historical record, and existing Sackler funds will continue to support educational causes. King's College London also announced it will cut ties, renaming its Sackler Institute for Translational Neurodevelopment, launched in 2013. The college's last £750,000 Sackler fund, received in 2021 from the Dr Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation, supports 22 doctoral students. These decisions follow investigations into the family's role in the opioid crisis.
